Big Muddy Monster (Murphysboro Mud Monster) Report

Southern Illinois Cryptid Investigation Summary

Updated: 2026

Overview

The Big Muddy Monster, also called the Murphysboro Mud Monster, is a cryptid reported near the Big Muddy River in Murphysboro, Illinois. Described as a 7–8 foot tall, bipedal, ape-like creature with mud-streaked white/cream-colored hair, a strong foul odor (river slime or musk), and sometimes glowing red eyes. It resembles a muddy, albino Bigfoot. The case gained attention due to multiple consistent eyewitness reports and official police involvement in 1973. The investigation remains open.

Key 1973 Sightings

•  June 25, ~11:55 PM – Riverside Park / Boat Ramp

Couple Randy Needham and Judy Johnson, parked near the river, heard a piercing scream (“eagle shrieking into a microphone”). They observed a large, hairy creature approaching their car and fled to report it. Police officers found large footprints (10–12 inches long) in the mud and heard the scream during investigation.

•  June 26 Evening – Westwood Hills (Ray Property)

A 5-year-old boy saw a “big ghost” in the backyard. Shortly after, teenagers Cheryl Ray and Randy Creath encountered the creature ~15–40 feet away on the porch. It was stocky (300–350+ lbs), with long arms, matted hair, and a powerful odor. It stared at them before retreating toward the river. Police found footprints and a black slime trail; a tracking dog followed the scent but became terrified near an abandoned barn. Additional screams were reported around 3 AM.

Officers documented tracks, slime, and sounds. Searches involved multiple personnel but yielded no capture.

Later Activity

•  1988: Sighting reported at a local salvage yard involving several witnesses.

•  Sporadic claims exist from the 1950s and early 1980s, but 1973 remains the primary documented cluster.

Evidence & Investigation Notes

•  Physical: Large bipedal footprints, black slime trail.

•  Sensory: Loud screams, strong odor, consistent descriptions across unrelated witnesses.

•  Credibility: Police (including officers like Ron Manwaring and Jimmie Nash) took reports seriously. One of Murphysboro PD’s few unsolved cases. No hoax proven.

•  Official File: Digital scans of 1973 police reports, eyewitness sketches, letters, and photos available via the City of Murphysboro website.

Cultural Impact

Murphysboro has embraced the legend with tourism, a dedicated case file, and media (e.g., documentaries like Creature from Big Muddy). It remains a staple of Illinois folklore and Bigfoot-style cryptid research.

WILDLIFE / UNEXPLAINED SOUND INCIDENT REPORT

Date of Incident: August 20, 2025

Location: Jackson County (rural property)

Report Prepared From: Account provided by recipient of videos and subsequent site visit

Source of Evidence

Videos were received from the reporting individual’s son. A friend of the son (aware of his interest in outdoor activities) originally sent the videos. The son was unable to identify the source of the sounds and immediately forwarded the videos.

Initial Assessment

The reporting individual reviewed the videos and could not identify any native animal known to produce sounds matching those recorded.

Site Visit – August 21, 2025

The reporting individual visited the property the day after receiving the videos.

Interview with Property Owner:

Owner has resided on the property for 30 years.

Owner was sitting on the deck drinking coffee when the sounds began.

  Owner recorded the videos.

Sounds continued for approximately 30–40 minutes.

Owner is a retired law enforcement officer.

Owner appeared sincere and was visibly shaken during the discussion.

Follow-Up Observations

Approximately six weeks later, similar sounds were again recorded on the property’s security cameras.

The reporting individual and owner walked the rugged rural property. No tracks were located. A definite den site was identified.

In subsequent conversations months later, the owner reported a noticeable lack of deer sightings on the property as the primary change observed.

Video was shortened and vocalizations were volume enhanced by The Sqwatchers.

Summary

Unidentified vocalizations lasting 30–40 minutes were recorded on August 20, 2025, by a long-term property owner (retired law enforcement) while on the deck. Similar sounds recurred on security cameras about six weeks later. Site inspection revealed a den site but no tracks. Property owner later noted reduced deer activity.
